Beginning Sigil Craft: Star

A Sigil is one’s Intent condensed into a single glyph. Whether it is a “word”, “picture” or a “mantra/phrase”, it is built to receive a Practitioner’s Will and Focus.  They are a powerful Craft that are encoded with one’s unique purpose. Only decipherable by the Practitioner, their Intent is to remain a secret as the Universe works to align and deliver one’s desire through that cosmic power.

Once designed and activated, a Sigil can be utilized in a variety of ways.

These sigils can be carved, drawn or painted in many ways:

- A pie crust with specific ingredient before baking (Kitchen Witchery)

- Carved into particular firewood before burning (Fey Witchery)

- Carved into candles before burning them (Universal Witchery)

- Painted onto rocks with environmental “paint”and buried or setting them out for the Elements (Elemental Witchery)

- Drawing them into the steam on a mirror after a Ritual shower (Sea Witchery)

There is NO LIMIT to where a Practioner can place these Sigils of Will and Intent nor WHO can utilize this Practice. Cardea, Babalawo, Voudouists, etc. ANY Practitioner can utilize this Universal power.

But before a Practitioner can employ a Sigil, the method of creation must be decided. Do not overthink it, keep it simple, a complicated sigil is not needed for most “every day” Works.

There is NO definitive method for creating a Sigil, only the elements that Sigils typically contain and the fact it must be charged/activated to work are common amongst all practices. The following outlined method is one of the more common, simpler, methods. Feel free to experiment to find what works best for your Craft or Practice.

Step 1. Write Your Intent

All magic begins with Purpose. A Practitioner’s Intent is the most important piece of that working. Sigils a great way to practice writing and actualizing Intent.

Step 2. Remove Any Vowels and Repeats

Looking at the Intent written down, erase or mark out all of the vowels and any letters that repeat, eventually leaving only one of each consonant from the original Intent phrase or word.

Step 3. Simplify the Letters (Optional)

You can break down the letters into simpler shapes (lines and curves) or leave them as they are. (Example: “breaking letters” – make a “p” into a “line” and a “curve”.  A “s” becomes two opposing curves. Etc)

Step 4. Arrange the Shapes

Manipulate these final shapes. Try laying them in different manners, directions, on top of each other, etc, to try to fit them into a single glyph. It will take some time to “feel Intuitively” about what the final shape will be but DO NO STOP until it FEELS RIGHT. It is a symbol of your Will and you will find it difficult to Focus on something you do not like. Visualizing your Intent through what you see will not come and the Work will fizzle out.

Step 5. Activate/Charge the Sigil

In a few cases it may be enough to simply draw the Sigil to activate it. Especially if this undertaking includes other elements such as herbs, colors, stones, planetary alignments, etc. But there are other Works where “a bit more” is needed. It helps to visualize the Sigil Work changing form as it does its work for you. For example, the pie baking and the Sigil changing color or carved into wood, it burning to ash and returning to Earth or drifting into the Air.  One can even imagine the Sigil on the candle melting with the wax and being trapped in it OR released into the Air with the power of Fire burning it away, etc. See in your Mind’s Eye the ways your Work is going to change. That in itself Charges or Activates it.

Sigil Notebook

Some Practitioners do NOT keep their Sigils. It is a “one and done” type Work. Other Practitioners keep record of Charging methods uses ONLY. Even others keep a record in their Book of Shadows as these are considered SpellCraft and can be reached for multiple times, especially if a Practitioner has what they call a “positive result”. (Chaos Witchery/Sigil Witchery) No matter one’s method, be consistent, be concise.

Happy Sigiling!
