This Plant Ally is used in everyday cooking in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca and the Yucatan Peninsula among the Mayan-speaking peoples and has traveled north well into the Southwest and all of California.
Uses:
Magick: This is both a Protective and Healing plant.
Medicinal: Tea made from Epazote leaves can be used sparingly in the treatment of amenorrhea, dysmenorrhea, malaria, chorea, hysteria, expectorant, catarrh, and asthma. (small amount/pinch of leaves)
Oil of Chenopdium is derived from this plant. With rendered essential oil, as little as FOUR DROPS of this oil can kill a small adult if ingested. But has been used sparingly for thousands of years as a helminth amongst the indigenous.
One of the other uses that has been successful for this herb is similar to bay leaf in that it will temper the chemicals beans release that cause flatulence when cooked. ONLY A PINCH or a few tiny leaves are needed to season, just as bay, in your dish and remove before serving.
Harvesting:
Leaves are best harvested before plant goes to seed. Gently pull leaves down and away from stalk.
