Marie Laveau
Voudou Queen

Born in September of 1801, much of Marie Laveau's life events such as when she was born have been shrouded in mystery and hushed talk.. Most records have deduced that she was the daughter of Charles Laveau and Marguerite D'Arcantel and grew up in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she would live her entire life.

As she grew up and moved out, she began living in an old adobe syle cottage, Marie is said to have been a humble but powerful individual and as history has written, or hearsay has spoken, she received the home for helping an affluent man free his son from murder charges. Stories of her continued kindness are reinforced by others who lived in her Community. They say that Marie Laveau was characterized as a woman who readily nursed the sick. She was known as a Healer in many ways. She provided for those in need of Matter and of Spirit many times over, sometimes at her own loss, and no matter their color. She is recorded as having attended Mass of every day of her life in her community.

She ministered to anyone she came across who wished to hear her. She especially helped the prisoners, regardless of color, or how they treated her. Sound like someone else? As strange as it may be, the “Voodoo Queen” modeled herself after the figure who guided the faith she chose as her primary Path. She shared the stories of her Path and how they had helped her stay strong in this new place and survive. As she did these things, she dedicated herself more and more … to the Roman Catholic church. She dutifully attended Mass at the local St Louis Cathedral as she felt it was the place to fill a servants heart. She took the book of the Path seriously, to heart.

Some feel she walked this Path better than others and melded it beautifully with what came naturally and what she was raised with. Some feel this is why she was shunned by others.

What do you think? Why do you think, or feel, the perception of her “power’ to heal was used against her? Do you think/feel Marie was “awakened” to something greater than she? Or, do you have a different perspective? Share with us!
